Environmental issues and $4.00 at the gas pumps are causing Americans to reduce their dependence on oil just as they did in the late 1970's, but this time there will be no turning back to the old ways. The global need for energy is projected to grow by 50% over the next 25 years and at a time when oil reserves are declining.
Alternative energy falls into a number of categories which include wind, solar, biofuels, geothermal, ocean energy, hydro, fuel cells, and energy conservation.
The Alternative Energy movement may be like the gold rush of the 1800's where some companies may strike it rich, and others just won't pan out. One should expect more risk in return for higher long term returns. Most investors, however, invest in Alternative Energy with more in mind than just making money. They want to do their part in helping America change its dependence on foreign oil, and to help the environment.
